Breathe

One of my favorite mornings in 2018 has to be this one. I shared last week a view captured on the same morning. Old Ghost was taken just a few hours before the picture in this post. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw this old pier floating in the mist. You can never be sure what you will find or capture when you grab your gear and head out.

For me, finding inspiring views like these is the beauty of photography. The unpredictable faces of nature and places, in which weather plays a huge role. This view was particularly compelling to me at the time I captured it. The moment made me appreciate my time in nature and ground my thoughts to the base of life. Before I went out to photograph, I seemed to be lost in feelings of worry and anxiety. I believe that taking action in something you love to do will free your thoughts and make you appreciate what you have.

Take a slow breath and focus on the things that make you happy.

Equipment & Exif

Nikon D810, Nikon 24-120 mm f/4.0 VR
ISO 100, 24 mm, f/8.0 & 1/200 sec.

Post-Processing

I used Lightroom to edit this photo. I went through basic settings, lens corrections and finally, I used the transform panel to straighten the perspective. Colors were modified with a preset Blue & Yellow from my Phase Preset Collection.

In other news. I've just created a new page, where you can quickly scroll through my favorite photographs with stories, equipment, and other information. See Behind The Photography.

I will be posting more of these stories here on my blog as well. The idea behind the page is to give you easier access to the stories behind my favorite photographs. Is there something specific you would like to see in the behind the photography posts? Let me know.

Capturing Perseid Meteor Shower is one of the things I try to shoot each year. This year we had luck with the weather and we headed to the coast with Konsta and Juuso. I set my time-lapse rail to a place I thought might work and set it to shoot for four hours. While my other camera was capturing the time-lapse, I took a bunch of different still images of the location. We were amazed at how bright some of the meteors were.

For this photograph, I ended up using three horizontal images.

Equipment & Exif

Nikon D810, Nikkor 14 - 24 mm f/2.8, Manfrotto Tripod
Three Exposures ISO 4000, 14 mm, f/2.8, 30 sec.

Post-processing

I used Lightroom CC to stitch the panorama together. First I edited the basic settings and added light to the detail with one of my Saga Presets: FG & Stars - Smooth. For colors, I used a Phase Preset: Color - Oldie.

The Show

Last week I was photographing with Konsta Punkka (@kpunkka) and Juuso Hämäläinen (@juusohd). We had an amazing experience after a long beautiful summer day in Kasnäs, Finland. The clouds drifted away from the mainland and were greeted with a grandiose display of stars and storm clouds. I used two vertical exposures to capture the field of view. I, of course, took several photographs of the scenery, but these two were the ones I used to create the final image. The lightning was so intense that it made the foreground look like it would have been shorter exposure.

Equipment & Exif

Nikon D810, Nikkor 14-24 mm f/2.8, Manfrotto Tripod
Two vertical shots: f/2.8, ISO 1250, 22 mm & 20 sec

Post-processing

Photoshop CC for stitching the images together, Lightroom CC for color editing Phase Preset: Vintage Early Morning and details with Saga Preset: Enhance Stars.

The Show - A Lightning Storm in Kasnäs, Finland 2016

Vast – Vík, Iceland

After driving to Vík for my first night in Iceland, I decided to head out and capture the beautiful night sky. I drove to multiple locations and one of which was Reynisfjara. This beach is a gem even in the daylight. I wanted to focus on the beautiful sky and vast landscape, so I ended up taking multiple shots of the Milky Way. I set my camera on my tripod and left it to take multiple photographs and shot this one. Standing still for 15 seconds is always a difficult task, and in this wind, it was almost impossible. Thankfully I ended up with a shot I was happy. With the photograph, I want to show you how beautifully vast the landscapes are in Iceland and also convey the feeling of how small we are in this Universe.

Equipment & Exif

Nikon D810, Nikkor 14–24 mm f/2.8, Sirui R4203 L Tripod & Manfrotto 3WAY-Head
ISO 6400, 24 mm, f/2.8, 15 sec.

Post-Processing

I used the new Saga Preset Collection to edit the image. First, I chose a Landscape preset: Cool Water and used the built-in graduated filters in the Saga Collections to enhance the stars and Milky Way. I chose a split-toning preset from the collection Blue and Green to slightly boost the colors. I opened the image in Photoshop and used the Puppet Warp to straighten my silhouette in the picture and remove the distortions from the picture. Lastly, I used Stars Enhance from my Fine Art Actions to boost the night sky.
