Vacant Beach

Vacant Beach is a series of images captured one August night after summer season on the deserted Yyteri beach, Finland

I visited Yyteri Beach a couple of weeks ago. After walking down to the beach first thing I noticed was this bright source of light in the distance of the beach. It was a new restaurant I hadn't seen before, and it was right at the beach. Unfortunately, it had huge lights that almost blinded me while I passed the place. I almost turned back to my car because it was something I had not wanted to be in my photographs, but I kept on walking along the beach and saw a lifeguard chair and a lifeboat. I took some shots and finally ended up in a darker part of the beach. As my eyes got used to the darkness, I loved how the dunes and sand looked.

I saw this feather in the sand and knew there was something that intrigued me. I visioned a shallow depth of field photograph with stars in the background and the feather as the central part of the image. I captured a couple of different shots while lying on the ground and waiting for the camera to take the long exposures. And while I was lying on the sand I was in awe of the moment and how something so simple as a feather can get in the state of awe. I started by capturing three horizontal images. It was hard to get the perfect low angle I wanted. Finally, I got what I was looking for and continued to photograph and roam around the beach. I love the combination of crashing waves and stars and the smell of the sea.

I wanted to create a small series of what I captured that night. I hope you enjoy the series as much as I enjoyed capturing these photographs.

Exif & Equipment

All of these photographs were captured with Nikon D810 and Sigma 20 mm f/1.4 lens. I used a RRS-tripod.
20 mm, ISO 3200, 20 sec, f/1.4

Post-Processing

I used Lightroom to edit these photographs with my Phase Presets (Color: Oldie).

Visions of Depth

I created new series of photographs, Visions of Depth on Behance. It was just released and featured in Behance. As you may have noticed, I have updated the website and will be adding all of these works to my print shop as well.

I'm currently working on my Masterclass Night Tutorial, and it should be ready to release in about a month. If you wish to be one of the first to review it, please leave a comment on this post and you may have a chance to get it before it's released.

Tips on Night Photography on Rajala Blogi (Finnish)

I would like thank each and everyone, who have supported my work by following it, sharing it and by buying prints and collections of my work. I'm truly grateful for the support!

For the next couple of weeks I will be travelling quite a bit. Hopefully capturing some new photographs to share with you.

Edge - Portfolio Book

For galleries I want to send examples of my images and the best way to do this is with a solid portfolio book. As my old books were not suitable for this due to the heavy use, I decided couple of days ago to order a new portfolio book "Edge" from a Finnish camera store Rajala Pro Shop and their new photo book. I just received it today safely wrapped inside a big envelope. I took some photographs of it and I must admit: it looks fantastic!

The first thing that struck me was the size and the thickness of the pages. It sure gives you a professional feeling, when the pages don't bend while going through the book. You can order it with 20 pages and the size is 30 cm x 30 cm, which is fantastic for showing quality pictures in decent size. I used square photos for my book so that I could fit more in the book. The overall quality of the book is superb! Colors, sharpness and detail are all well balanced.

I used matte finish on the cover. There is also a glossy finish available

If you want to prevent it for scratching over time I would recommend to go with a glossy finish

Here you can see how thick the pages are

The spreads look fantastic and the overall quality of the prints is excellent

Great sharpness and detail in the photographs

If you are located in Finland and you are searching for a book to show your work, or want to create a book for yourself  I highly recommend Rajala Pro Shop photo book: Rajala Kuvakirja

For those of you who would like to see a book with my pictures, I will be working on it in the future!
